RADICALLY DIFFERENT THERAPY · MISSOURI
Couples counseling for Anderson, MO.
Life changed. The two of you are still trying to catch up.
A new role, a demanding season, or a change in the family can rearrange a relationship before you have had a chance to talk about it. What used to work may no longer fit. You can care about each other and still be struggling to understand what each person needs now.

WHAT BRINGS YOU HERE?
Who are you being asked to become?
A transition can bring different burdens to each partner. One person may need more support while the other feels stretched beyond what they can give. You may also disagree about which changes are temporary and which ones are here to stay.
We can talk about those pressures, the expectations you have of each other, and what has happened to your connection while you have been managing everything else.
No fluff, no BS therapy for relationships that need radical help.

THE WORK IN THE ROOM
We look at how stress travels between you.
Stress may begin outside the relationship and then become personal. A request for help sounds like criticism. A tired response sounds like indifference. Before long, you are dealing with the original pressure and feeling hurt by each other.
I use Emotionally Focused Therapy to slow down that exchange. We look at what you have been carrying, how you signal that you need support, and what makes it difficult for your partner to respond.
There is also room to name what you miss about the relationship before this change. We can work on how you stay connected while adjusting to the life you actually have now, with realistic attention to each person’s capacity.
A changed life may require a new conversation about being partners.

BEFORE YOU SCHEDULE
Questions about getting started.
Where do we meet if we live in Anderson, MO?
Your appointment is at my office in Webb City, Missouri, near Joplin: 2830 Mt. Hope Rd., Webb City, MO 64870. Both partners attend in person at this location.
Can we come when the main stress is outside the relationship?
Yes. We can work on how that stress affects your interactions and how you respond to each other while dealing with it. You do not need to blame the relationship for the original problem.
What if we need different kinds of support?
We can get specific about those differences. Support that feels helpful to one person may miss the other person’s need. Understanding that mismatch can give you something concrete to work on.
Do we need to wait until things settle down?
You need a time both partners can attend. The changes and demands you are managing can be part of what we discuss in the session, even while the situation is still unfolding.
