Christian Premarital Counseling in Joplin, MO

Prepare for a Christian Marriage That Can Handle Real Life

You love God. You love each other. That is a meaningful foundation for marriage. It does not automatically teach you how to handle money, sex, conflict, family boundaries, household responsibilities, disappointment, or the moment one of you wants to talk and the other would rather disappear into the garage.

Faith matters. So does doing the work.

Christian premarital counseling is where we talk honestly about the marriage you are actually entering, not the polished version you may feel pressure to present at church. You do not need to pretend that you never disagree, never doubt, never struggle sexually, and already know exactly how to be a Christian husband or wife.

You are two imperfect people making a lifelong commitment. Let’s prepare accordingly.

Loving Jesus Does Not Make You Automatically Good at Marriage

Christian couples are sometimes handed an impressive number of Bible verses and very little practical help. You may understand that marriage is a covenant and still have no idea what to do when one of you feels criticized and the other shuts down. You may agree that forgiveness matters while having completely different ideas about accountability. You may both value family while privately disagreeing about how involved that family should be.

Shared faith does not erase personality differences, family histories, attachment wounds, sexual expectations, debt, anxiety, or conflict. It gives the marriage meaning. It does not remove the need to learn how the relationship works.

PREPARE/ENRICH Is a Map, Not a Spiritual Report Card

PREPARE/ENRICH is a well-established relationship assessment that helps us see your strengths, differences, and growth areas before marriage. It looks at communication, conflict, finances, sex, personality, family relationships, spiritual beliefs, parenting expectations, household responsibilities, and commitment.

It is not a test of whether your relationship is sufficiently Christian. It will not tell us whether God wants you to get married. I am not going to announce whether you pass. It gives us a map.

Covenant Does Not Mean Ignoring Problems

A covenant deserves honesty. It does not require you to ignore serious concerns, silence your needs, excuse harmful behavior, or slap the word forgiveness over a problem that has never been addressed.

Real forgiveness is not pretending something did not hurt. Accountability is not punishment. Submission is not control. Leadership is not domination. Keeping the peace is not the same thing as having peace.

If those words are going to shape your marriage, you should know what they mean to both of you.

Learn Your Cycle Before It Starts Running the Marriage

Most couples develop a repeating conflict cycle. One person pushes harder because disconnection feels frightening. The other becomes quiet because every answer seems to make the situation worse. The more one partner reaches, the more the other retreats. The more the other retreats, the more desperate the first person becomes.

Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT, helps you understand what happens beneath the anger, defensiveness, criticism, or shutdown. The goal is not to eliminate every disagreement. It is to stop treating each other as the enemy when the relationship feels threatened.

Yes, Christian Couples Need to Talk About Sex

Christian couples are often given plenty of rules about sex and very little help talking about it. That leaves many people entering marriage with expectations, questions, shame, anxiety, past experiences, or differences in desire that they have never said out loud.

Marriage does not magically make sexual communication comfortable. A wedding ceremony does not automatically create matching levels of desire. And you’ll figure it out is not a particularly impressive plan.

We can talk openly about affection, desire, expectations, boundaries, sexual values, pornography, previous experiences, pain, anxiety, body image, and the way emotional connection affects physical intimacy. My advanced training in sex therapy allows these conversations to be direct, informed, and judgment-free.

You will not receive a lecture about being a good Christian husband or wife. I will not hand you a list of Bible verses and pretend that is enough preparation for a satisfying sexual relationship. We will talk about the real people and the real relationship in the room.

Your In-Laws May Also Think They Are Joining the Marriage

Families can be a wonderful source of support. They can also have opinions about holidays, money, children, church, careers, where you live, and how often you should answer the phone. One partner may experience family closeness as love. The other may feel as though the marriage has acquired an unpaid board of directors.

What Christian Premarital Sessions Are Actually Like

Sessions are active, honest, and focused on your particular relationship. We use your PREPARE/ENRICH results to identify the conversations that matter most. Then we use EFT to understand the emotional patterns that appear when those conversations become personal.

This is not a church class. It is not a lecture. You will talk to each other, notice what happens between you, and practice responding differently when either person feels hurt, misunderstood, pressured, or alone.

Sessions are 100 to 110 minutes and cost $180.

Faith Can Be as Present as You Want It to Be

I graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary, and I am very much a Christian. Faith can be incorporated directly through prayer, Scripture, spiritual values, and conversations about covenant. It can also remain in the background while we focus on the relationship itself.

You will not need to explain Christian culture to me. You also will not be pressured to perform it.
