RADICALLY DIFFERENT THERAPY · MISSOURI

Couples counseling for Oronogo, MO.

You know the fight is coming. Somehow, you are in it again.

The subject changes; the sequence is familiar. One of you presses, the other pulls away, and both become more certain that the other person is the problem. Recognizing the pattern can be frustrating when you still cannot find a way out of it.

WHAT BRINGS YOU HERE?

Find the moment the pattern takes over.

It may begin with an unanswered question or a look across the room. In a few seconds, each of you is reacting to what you expect the other person to do next. The conversation starts running on its own familiar rules.

We look at that sequence closely. What sets it in motion? How does each response affect the next one? What are you trying to protect when you become louder, quieter, sharper, or harder to reach?

No fluff, no BS therapy for relationships that need radical help.

01

Understand the cycle you keep falling into and work with it as it unfolds.

02

When the cycle includes the aftermath of betrayal, address the injury as well as the reactions.

03

Look at repeated pursuit, pressure, and withdrawal around physical closeness.

04

Pay attention to your conflict patterns as you prepare for a shared future.

THE WORK IN THE ROOM

We use what happens in the room.

You do not have to describe the pattern perfectly. If it appears while you are talking to me, that gives us an opportunity to see it together. I will interrupt when slowing down can help us understand a turning point.

Through Emotionally Focused Therapy, we explore what each reaction is doing for you. Pushing may be an attempt to get reassurance. Pulling away may be an attempt to prevent another failure. Those intentions can have painful effects on your partner.

We work toward responses that make the underlying need more understandable. This includes noticing the impact of your behavior and practicing a different exchange while you have help.

Knowing the pattern is a beginning. We work with the next moment, too.

BEFORE YOU SCHEDULE

Questions about getting started.

Where do we meet if we live in Oronogo, MO?

Your appointment is at my office in Webb City, Missouri, near Joplin: 2830 Mt. Hope Rd., Webb City, MO 64870. Both partners attend in person at this location.

We already know our pattern. What else can therapy add?

We can work with what happens when the pattern is actually activated. Understanding the idea and responding differently while you are upset can be very different experiences. I help with that second part in the room.

What if we argue during the appointment?

I pay attention to the interaction and will step in. We can use the moment to understand what each of you heard, felt, and did, then work on a different way of responding.

Will both people have things to work on?

Both partners participate. Their responsibilities may be different, and harmful actions still need to be addressed directly. Looking at a pattern does not mean assigning equal responsibility for everything that happened.

FOR COUPLES IN ORONOGO, MO

The next conversation can be a place to work.

Bring a familiar argument. We can slow it down, find where you lose each other, and begin practicing something different with support in the room.
