RADICALLY DIFFERENT THERAPY · KANSAS
Couples counseling for Frontenac, KS.
You are already defending yourself before the conversation has started.
A familiar tone is enough. You hear disappointment, your body braces, and you start preparing your answer while your partner is still speaking. They experience that reaction as proof you will never listen. We can look at what you are both expecting before another ordinary conversation goes wrong.

WHAT BRINGS YOU HERE?
What do you expect to hear?
Past arguments can shape a new conversation before either person has said much. You may hear a complaint in a question, or resignation in a short answer. Sometimes the expectation is accurate; sometimes it adds more hurt to an already difficult moment.
We can examine the actual words, the history behind your reaction, and the effect of the response. This gives both of you a chance to understand what is happening beyond the argument about tone.
No fluff, no BS therapy for relationships that need radical help.

THE WORK IN THE ROOM
We pay attention to the first reaction.
I may pause an exchange very early and ask what you heard your partner saying about you. The answer can reveal why you felt an urgent need to explain, counterattack, or stop talking.
With Emotionally Focused Therapy, we connect that reaction to the worry underneath it. Your partner also gets a chance to clarify their experience. I help both of you stay involved long enough to hear more than the accusation you expected.
We still address words or behavior that are hurtful. Understanding why you became defensive can help you respond differently; it does not erase the effect of the response you chose.
A conversation can change when there is room to hear the next sentence.

BEFORE YOU SCHEDULE
Questions about getting started.
Where do we meet if we live in Frontenac, KS?
Your appointment is at my office in Webb City, Missouri, near Joplin: 2830 Mt. Hope Rd., Webb City, MO 64870. Both partners attend in person at this location.
What if everything I say sounds critical to my partner?
We can look at a specific exchange, including your intention, your words, and what your partner heard. I help you understand the gap and work on how both of you respond to it.
Will you tell us to use a nicer tone?
Tone can matter, but we also need to understand what is driving the reaction and how your partner experiences it. We work on the meaning, the behavior, and the response together.
Can we come if one person tends to shut down?
Yes. We can discuss what happens in those moments and work on finding words for that experience. Both partners need to be willing to attend and participate in the work.
FOR COUPLES IN FRONTENAC, KS
