The partner asking for therapy may be afraid that reluctance means the relationship no longer matters. The reluctant partner may care deeply and still worry about what will happen in the room.
We can talk about those meanings directly. Both partners need to attend and participate, but you do not need matching levels of enthusiasm or an agreed explanation of the problem.

THE WORK IN THE ROOM
Skepticism can be part of the first conversation.
I want to hear from both of you, including the person who did not make the appointment. What do you think is happening? What worries you about being here? What would make the conversation useful enough to participate in?
Using Emotionally Focused Therapy, I look at the reactions between you, including how the discussion about getting help has unfolded. Asking repeatedly and pulling away may already have become another painful version of the same pattern.
I am direct and involved. I help you express what matters, listen to each other, and examine your own responses. You can ask questions about the process and say when something feels difficult or unclear.
You can arrive with different hopes for the same appointment.

For Lamar couples, appointments are at the Webb City office near Joplin. Both partners need to come in person for the 100–110-minute session.

Questions about getting started.
Where do we meet if we live in Lamar, MO?
Your appointment is at my office in Webb City, Missouri, near Joplin: 2830 Mt. Hope Rd., Webb City, MO 64870. Both partners attend in person at this location.
Can I come alone and work on the relationship?
This practice is devoted to couples work, with both partners attending. If your partner is not willing to come, individual support would need to be arranged with a clinician who offers that service.
Does being skeptical mean therapy cannot work?
You can be uncertain and still participate. We can discuss your concerns, what you would like to understand, and what you are willing to try. I cannot promise a particular outcome.
Will the person who booked get to tell the whole story first?
I make room to hear both partners. The person who arranged the appointment does not get to define the entire relationship for the other person.
